Many will not let devotion to the Blessed Virgin even take root in their hearts. But blessed is the person who accepts this grace and keeps it! Such a devotion dwells in all who are the Lord’s heritage—in all who will praise Him eternally in heaven.
What is the most unusual or unique Marian ritual/procession/representation that you have encountered?
The most striking and unusual ritual I have heard of is a historic one recorded in the German shrine of Kevelaer, though it is not a ritual in the strictest sense of the word.
In the 18th century the small pilgrimage chapel would remain open during the night, until the local priest found out childless couples would sneak in there to have intercourse. They believed that being so close to Mary’s shrine would help them in their attempt to have children.
Perhaps needless to say the local clergy did not share the same folk belief as some pilgrims and the chapel would remain closed during the night from then on.
To me this story shows in what unusual ways and situations people rely on Mary’s help.
