Salus Populi Romani
Today is the feast of Our Lady of the Snows, which commemorates the legendary founding of the church of St Mary Major in Rome. According to tradition it was Mary herself who chose the spot of the church, by making snow fall on the site.
The basilica also houses the famous painting of the Salus Populi Romani (Health of the Roman People). This ancient icon has been attributed to the evangelist St Luke.
