The miraculous statue of Our Lady of Sorrows of Šaštín, the patroness of Slovakia.
The pilgrimage to Šaštín dates back to 1564, when the wife of a Hungarian nobleman commissioned a statue of Mary in thanks for an answered prayer. It soon became an object of special devotion.
The current basilica was built in the 18th century by the order of empress Maria Theresa. It was consecrated in 1764, when the shrine celebrated its second centenary.
