It is common for pilgrims to the shrine to offer and burn wax body parts, or sometimes whole bodies, to Mary as a token of thanks or prayer.
Today is the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, which celebrates the apparition of Mary to three shepherd children in Portugal in 1917. The village of Fatima has been an important place of pilgrimage ever since.
