May

In ancient times, the month of May was dedicated to sexual love with its rites in honour of Pan. The Church has done an astonishing sublime deed in transforming these pagan and sensual rites into the cult of the Most Pure Virgin! The month of May is the Spring of the year, and Mary is the Spring of Grace; the month of May is the month of flowers, and Mary is “The Flower,” the Mystical Rose.

-  Bl. John Henry Newman

Most holy Mary

This is the image of the Queen
Who reigns in bliss above;
Of her who is the hope of all,
Whom we and angels love!
Most holy Mary!

- May crowning hymn

Do you practise any special devotions for Mary in May?

Ecce Mater tua

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers and to the greatest of them all, Mary Most Holy.

Little altar

If you are not able to assist at the public services or devotions in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary in your own church, erect a little altar to Mary in your house, and adorn her picture, or statue, with flowers, and there, every day, either alone or with others of your household, meditate upon her virtues, and implore her powerful intercession.

Queen

O Mary, we crown you with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May.

- May crowning hymn

May

May is the month of promise; and is not this the very aspect in which we most suitably regard the Blessed Virgin, Holy Mary, to whom this month is dedicated?

- Bl John Henry Newman

Queen

Bring flowers of the rarest,
bring flowers of the fairest
From garden and woodland
and hillside and vale;
Our full hearts are swelling,
our glad voices telling
The praise of the loveliest
Rose of the vale.

Oh Mary, we crown you
with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels,
Queen of the May.
